Choosing a Topic

After choosing the subject for the extended essay, the next step in the research process is to define what the research is going to focus on - the topic.

At this stage the student needs to explore:

• what are my possible topics?
• what do I know about those topics?
• which words would be good search terms and keywords?
• can I identify key words to begin the research?
• is there background information on the topic?
• do I need to refine and narrow the topic?
